About How Poor Am I?
How Poor Am I? is a free tool that makes wealth inequality tangible. Instead of abstract coefficients and percentile tables, it shows where you stand in your country's wealth distribution and how far that is from the very top.
How It Works
The site has two main modes:
- Wealth Percentile — Enter your net wealth, or estimate it from income with refinement factors, to see roughly where you sit in the national wealth distribution.
- Billionaire Comparison — Compare your annual income with the wealthiest person in your country and translate that gap into years, lifetimes, and historical scales.
Data Sources
The calculations are grounded in public datasets and academic inequality research:
- WID.world — wealth shares by percentile group and core inequality statistics.
- OECD / World Bank / FRED — economic indicators such as wages, prices, population, and housing data.
- Forbes Real-Time Billionaires — billionaire net worth snapshots used in the comparison mode.
Open Source
The project is open source under the MIT License. You can inspect the code, review the data pipeline, suggest improvements, or run your own copy.
Privacy
All calculations happen in your browser. Your income, wealth, and refinement inputs are not sent to any server.
